Margot: 3 Months

My little beauty is a quarter of a year old.  How does the first year pass so quickly?  Miss Margot is growing before my very eyes.
She babbles.  Oh, how she babbles!  Loudly, for all to hear.  She is all girl, this one.  She likes to talk.  I imagine that she's telling me the recent gossip, only without the hushed voice.

She smiles.  Big smiles.  My favorite part of the day is when I go into her room to get her out of bed in the morning.  She lights up when she notices that it's me standing above her.  Oh, how that melts my heart!

She is strong.  She's got excellent head control, and she can look from side to side.  Tummy time isn't her favorite, but she doesn't hate it, either.  She pushes up with her little arms and looks around.

She is big!  At her last appointment with the pediatrician her height was in the 93rd percentile, and her weight, the 90th.  My little lady is a bit of a giant!  We said goodbye to size 0-3 months a few weeks ago, and are quite comfortable in 3-6 months.

She eats well, sleeps well, and plays well.  She is just happy.  As am I.

Margot: Two Months

Oh, how the time is already flying.  My girl is two months old today.  What a wonderful month is has been!
We have had a few MAJOR highlights this month.  First and foremost, she started smiling.  There is absolutely nothing better in this world than seeing your child's lips turn up into a smile when they see you.  This is J's favorite part of early babyhood.  Up until now, he hasn't had a ton of interaction with the wee one.  As feeding is mainly my gig (although we have introduced a bottle here and there), he doesn't get a chance to feel the love as often as I do.  But now that she can look up at her daddy and smile, I have a feeling Margot has begun the inevitable wrapping of the father around the little finger...
The other highlight this month?  She has begun to think about sleeping through the night.  It has happened twice now, so I am hoping this means we are on our way to the real deal!  On the nights when she does awaken, she usually needs me for about 15 minutes somewhere near the 4am hour.  I can live with it.  Now I need to get used to her sleeping longer stretches, because the two times she slept all the way until morning, I slept fitfully, anticipating her waking up at any moment.

Gabe has turned a bit of a corner with his baby sister.  He exhibits serious concern when she cries.  He laughs at her coos.  And he even let me put her on his lap for a hot second.  I call all of this progress.  I think he may just love her yet.

And now, photo bomb.

He's TWO!

Yes, you read that correctly.  The nugget is two years old.  Let's pause for a moment to let that sink in...
Enjoying a lollipop, which he loves.  What does he NOT love?  Having his picture taken.
I can hardly believe that he's been with us for two whole years (+ four days one week ten days).  They have certainly been the best two years of my life, and life just keeps getting sweeter.

My boy is starting to develop a personality, and he is so much fun.  He is beginning to say new words at a rapid pace.  He can run and jump and climb with the big kids,  And this week marks the first time I've seen him exhibit a sense of humor, and it was amazing!  He laughed- big, huge, belly laughed- at a silly part of a movie.  It is so incredible to watch my boy learn and grow!

Gabe's favorites at two:

  • Cars.  He can differentiate between a car and a truck.  Lately he's figured out what a jeep is.  And in the construction vehicle department, he likes to point out and name dump trucks and cement mixers.  Trains and airplanes are fun, too.  He likes things that GO!
  • Books.  This boy would sit and read and read and read all the livelong day.  This makes my heart happy.
  • The alphabet.  Gabe knows all of his capital letters, and a few lowercase here and there.  He likes to point out and name the letters he sees.  I am amazed that he already has this knowledge at such a young age.  Which brings me to his next favorite...
  • Super Why!  What a great show.  I am confident that this show is what got my boy started identifying letters.  We, of course, nurtured and encouraged this.  Gabe also likes to watch Dinosaur Train and Sesame Street.  We haven't completely forsaken his old friends over at Yo Gabba Gabba, but I much prefer PBS.
  • Technology.  Big surprise here, right?  Gabe is more than competent with his iPad.  Yes, his iPad.  He comandeered J's original pad, and J got a mini for Christmas, so now Gabe has his very own.  He has several apps that he knows and loves.  He also loves the iPhone.  (Best thing ever for keeping kids content whilst out in public.  Not sure how people parented before this best invention ever.)
Although the nugget is officially a terrible two, he is still pretty happy, fun, and well behaved.  He has his moments (don't we all?), but overall, he is a really great kid.  I can't wait to see what the next year has in store!

Margot: One Month

Yep, it's already been a month.  HOW HAS IT ALREADY BEEN A MONTH?
It seems that being a mommy to two has kept me from my dear blog.  I'm not sure why- maybe it's due to being constantly on the go.  The only thing I can figure is that bloggers who are also parents to young children must not value their sleep as much as I do.  Because I can promise you that once my kids are asleep, I'm asleep.  There will be no blogging after bedtime for this mommy.

But such is life.  Maybe one day I'll find my way back to this space on a more regular basis.  Until then, I will  try my best to document the big stuff!  (You know, for the two readers I may have left.)

Such as the little lady's first month with us...

Folks, it's been a rough one.  And not in the usual ways.  As far as babies go, this one is a dream.  She only cries when she's hungry.  Seriously.  If her tummy is full, she's happy.  She is nursing like a champ.  This is a really big deal here, because feeding was a constant struggle with Gabe.  I can see now why those moms talk about how easy and great breastfeeding can be, because with her, it's easy and great!  At night, she usually only wakes me up once.  That's right- once.  And since both of my kids rock at sleeping, I can usually catch one more hour of sleep after her morning feeding, leaving me feeling pretty well rested.

But then the sickness hit us...

J started it, then Gabe got it, then me.  We prayed that it wouldn't find its way to our littlest, but alas, it caught her.  RSV.

Just an annoying cold-like virus to most of us, but to a newbie, it's pretty serious.  In the past two weeks, we've been to the pediatrician four times and to the emergency room once.  Breathing was not coming easily to our little girl.  Scary stuff.  Luckily, we seem to be over the worst of it now, and she is on the mend!

Miss Margot has been such a joyous addition to our little family.  She is beautiful and wonderful and snuggly and sweet and I just want to stare at her all day long.  I so look forward to watching this little one grow (but not too quickly!).  Truly loving life as a family of four!

Bump Watch: The Birth Story

When I last reported, I was all set to be induced Sunday morning, and looking forward to welcoming our little girl into the world.

Saturday, I crossed every last thing off of my Pre-Baby To Do list, took Gabe to a birthday party,  double checked our hospital bags, and firmed up plans for the nugget while we were away having the baby.  At the end of the day, utterly exhausted, I took in a warm bath and had a half a glass of wine.  I knew that sleep would be elusive that night, as I was too anxious and excited to meet our little lady, so I was trying to relax as much as possible before bed.

Amazingly, I managed to fall asleep with relative ease.  At 1:30, I got up to use the bathroom, and at that point, realized that my sleep for the night had probably come to an end.  The excitement hit, and I COULD NOT fall back asleep.  So I laid there.  And tried to think sleepy thoughts.  And I laid there some more.  And I tried to get comfortable.  And then around 2:40, I felt what I can only describe as a POP inside my belly.

This was not a kick- no.  This was something I hadn't felt before.  I wondered vaguely to myself if it could possibly be my water breaking.  So I got out of bed and headed to the bathroom.  With a gush it became very obvious, very quickly, that yes, indeed, my water had broken.

When I came out of the bathroom, I informed J that the baby couldn't wait until morning.  It was go time!

We very calmly got ready to go.  Second baby syndrome!  I curled my hair, J showered and shaved.  I made the bed, and gathered the last minute suitcase additions.  Once I felt like I had myself completely together, I called the doctor to let her know the situation, at which point she told us to head on into the hospital.  We called a neighbor to come sleep at our house until J's mom could arrive.  Contractions started up, and quickly settled into a pattern about three minutes apart and a minute long.

Man, does my body know how to contract.

By the time we made it to the hospital, the contractions were pretty painful, but not unbearable.  We got registration and paperwork handled, and got settled in our labor & delivery room.  I answered about a million questions for our nurse, went over my birth plan (get drugs, have a baby), and had my IV placed.  I was still doing okay at this point, and was managing to breathe through increasingly painful contractions.

Once all of this was taken care of, the nurse got around to checking me. I was dilated 4 centimeters.  I was so encouraged by this.  It took hours and hours for me to reach 4 cm with Gabe.  18 hours, to be exact.  Things were obviously moving more quickly with this baby.

It was around this time that contractions kicked it up a notch.  As in, shit just got real.  Less than a minute apart, and INTENSE.  I got a dose of narcotic in my IV to take the edge off while I waited for my epidural. I had to receive a certain amount of IV fluids before they could place the epidural- I remember this excruciating wait with Gabe, too.  All in all, about two hours of the real deal, killmenow kind of  pain.  Then, sweet relief.

By 7 am, I was no longer feeling much pain.  This epidural was much lighter than the one I had with Gabe.  I could feel and move my legs, and could still feel plenty of pressure with each contraction.  But the excruciating pain was no longer.  My blood pressure dropped quite a bit with the drugs, but we soon had that under control, as well, and it became a waiting game.  The next time the nurse checked me, I was A WHOPPING 8 CM and the baby had moved down nicely!

I was absolutely shocked and amazed at the speed with which all of this was happening.  These contractions were doing their job without the help of any pitocin.  Again, so different than with Gabe, whose 25 hour labor was pitocin assisted.

By 9:30, I was past 9 cm and it was pretty clear that we had very little time left before we'd be meeting our baby.  I had told the nurse that I pushed for less than 15 minutes with my first baby, and was hoping to be that lucky again (I'd soon find out that she thought I'd said 45 minutes.)  A few minutes later I felt an enormous pressure and knew that it was time to push.  The nurse had me do a "practice" push to see what kind of progress I could make.  She told me how well I had moved the baby down, and decided to have me really push through the next contraction.

She didn't believe me when I said I was a good pusher.

After that one contraction, she very lightheartedly joked about how haha-isn't-it-the-craziest-thing-when-someone-tells-you-to-stop-pushing-but-yeah-I-really-need-you-to-stop-pushing-because-the-baby-is-coming-but-the-doctor-went-home.  She then stuck her head out the door and yelled at another nurse to call the doctor and tell her to step on the gas because the baby is coming.

So I waited an extremely uncomfortable five minutes for the doctor to arrive- all the while with a baby in the birth canal.

The doctor arrived, and with two more contractions, our sweet girl was here.  Margot was born at 10:10 am.  It had been only 7 1/2 hours since my water had broken.

She was placed immediately on my chest and examined there.  She passed all of her initial assessments with perfect scores.  After a bit, they took her to be weighed and measured.  My little chunk weighed in at 9 pounds even and was 19 3/4" long.  Her head circumference was 14 1/2", which by the nurse's reaction is on the larger side.  I hear all of these stats and I am uber-impressed with my birthing skills.  I rock at pushing out babies.

A couple hours later we moved over into our postpartum room and spent the rest of our two day stay resting  and bonding.  The little lady latched right on and is nursing like a champ.  I was up and about by Sunday afternoon with shockingly little pain.  Recovery thus far has been a breeze.  Gabe has remained largely unaffected by the new addition, and is just loving having both his parents at home with him.  Life is carrying on oh-so-sweetly now that we are a family of four.

Our sweet Margot Claire is just perfection, and we could not possibly be more in love.

Bump Watch: Week 39

Well...this is the end.
Little Miss Margot Claire is coming this weekend.  She has been given 48 hours notice, and if she has not vacated the premises willingly in that time frame, she will be evicted.

I've gotta say, I never thought I'd be so thrilled about an induction.

I'd love to say that I'm a fan of the natural, of letting things happen on their own timetable.  And with Gabe, I was lucky that he came on his own in a timely manner.  But the truth is, I'm am so ready to get this little one out of me that I don't really care how it happens.

And I got lucky.

I've been told for awhile now that they would not let me go past my due date, since there is a chance that this little lady is on the larger side.  Fine by me.  The only condition was that I have a "favorable cervix" prior to induction.  I was a tad worried about this, since I never dilated even a measly centimeter prior to labor with the nugget.  So imagine my delight when I heard the doctor say I was "a good 3" this morning!  HUZZAH!  FAVORABLE!

So she left me to go and check the hospital schedule for next week.

When she returned to the room, she told me that THE ENTIRE WEEK was booked.  As in, not one single open spot for an induction.  And the moment I started bumming hard about this news, she followed up with "so I took the liberty of scheduling you for Sunday."

Bless you, doctor friend.

They don't normally induce on the weekends, but she is a kind soul who took pity on me (and really didn't want me delivering past my due date), so she is coming in on a Sunday to get this kid born.

Will I miss the excitement of the onset of labor?  Sure.  That was definitely a moment I'll always remember.  Am I excited that the end is here, and that I can take a minute to put all of our final plans definitively in place beforehand?  You betcha.

So this is it, friends.  The final Bump Watch.  I'm quite certain that I'll be MIA for awhile (I'm sure you'll understand), but I promise to update and photo bomb as soon as I am able!

Bump Watch: Week 38

Okay, so I didn't get around to posting on time last week.  And then I kept putting it off because I was hoping I'd just have the baby.  But I'm still pregnant, folks.
And I'm ready not to be.  Get this baby outta me.  The end.
